When, as a student, I became acquainted with urology, I was captivated by the diversity of the specialty, since we can eliminate the etiological factors underlying the patient’s complaints using one of the broadest ranges of tools. At the same time, in addition to classic open surgeries, we encounter a multitude of laparoscopic (and robot-assisted), microsurgical and completely different, endoscopic surgeries of the upper and lower urinary tract, alongside which extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWL) also deserves mention.
I am among those fortunate people who, in the course of their work, can encounter the widest variety of diseases, yet despite this my attention is still directed towards patients with kidney stones. We have numerous tools for the removal of kidney stones, but we place only slight emphasis on prevention. The prevalence of urolithiasis in Hungary affects 10% of the population. In developed countries, the number of patients is continuously increasing. During follow-up and treatment, the patient spends a lot of time away from their family and workplace and is exposed to various infections and ionizing radiation.
